The biggest change in Android 12 is Google’s revamp of the OS, which it calls Material You. The company says it’s the largest design update in Android’s history and makes stock Android look like a really good custom launcher. It also includes features that make it easier to use the phone with one hand.
A new screen timer allows you to set how long you want to spend in each app or game, and it will automatically shut off when your session is over. It’s also easy to pause YouTube videos or Google Assistant with a single tap. The Pixel-exclusive Game Dashboard feature will let you record your gameplay and display a live FPS counter so you can track performance in real-time. You can even toggle between different gaming profiles to customize the experience according to your needs.
Other big changes include a revamped Quick Settings and more customizable themes. You can now choose a default color for the Quick Settings shade based on your wallpaper, and the system theme can be a different color for each app. And you can now turn on a feature that makes your phone extra dim to make it easier to read in low light.
The update also introduces new security features. Google will limit the number of apps that can access your microphone and camera, and you’ll be able to quickly disable the camera or mic from the notification shade. And you’ll be able to password protect specific folders in Photos.
